More than 50 years after the legendary first boat of the same length, the Finns are now presenting an exciting new design. The racing series comes with it

The vital statistics are exciting: a design by Juan K, who has made a name for himself above all in the Open 60, weighing less than three tonnes, 1,400 kilograms of which is even in the keel, what the shipyard calls a "soft" rig that "offers a myriad of trimming options", foils that push the boat upwind and downwind out of the water and an almost obligatory innovative drive system from Torqeedo. These are the key features of the Club Swan 36.

So it's no wonder that the design is reminiscent of a shrunken Open 60. For example, the inward transition from hull to deck, which offers less resistance in waves and is intended to shift the centre of gravity downwards. The foils are also C-shaped, with a variable angle of attack of course, and are reminiscent of the innovative open class. According to the shipyard, however, the biggest technical feature is the rig: only one pair of spreaders, strong backstays and the very mouldable profile leave room for extensive trimming.

On downwind courses, the boat needs to be travelled with a lean of around 10 degrees. This is how the foils work best, although they then require an attentive hand on the trim, and the leeward side of the two rudders is optimally energised. Everything together ensures full control during the undoubtedly exciting gennaker rides. Incidentally, this is driven on the retractable bowsprit.

The class offers an ideal framework for ambitious owners. As with the TP52, the owner steers the boat himself and a maximum of 50 per cent of the crew may be professionals. On the one hand, this is intended to keep costs in check and, on the other, open up new target groups for the Swan brand. With the revitalisation of the Nations Cup, in which four races for the Club Swan 36 will take place in 2019, the shipyard is also providing an ideal playing field for owners. While these regattas will initially all take place in the Mediterranean, the aim is to establish a series on the Baltic Sea in the medium term.

Construction number 0, the prototype, is currently being built and then extensively tested by the shipyard. Swan Sales will provide a price on request.
